Why study CAR T-cell therapy for autoimmune diseases?

CAR T therapy has already shown great success in treating blood cancers, like leukemia and lymphoma. In many autoimmune diseases, certain immune cells (called B-cells) cause trouble by telling the body to attack itself. Because CAR T therapies target cells that have a specific marker, our clinical trials are studying whether it may safely stop this immune attack and provide a potential new treatment approach.

This clinical study is testing the safety and effectiveness of an investigational CAR T-cell therapy (KITE-363) for adults with certain autoimmune diseases affecting the nervous system. It is designed for patients with multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, or chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy whose symptoms have returned or have not responded to standard treatments.

How does CAR T therapy work in autoimmune diseases?

In autoimmune diseases, CAR T therapy is an innovative, investigational treatment being studied to reprogram your own immune cells to find and attack specific B cells that play a role in your condition.

Here's how the process works:

STEP 1

Collect

The process begins by collecting some of your T cells, which are a type of white blood cell, from your blood.

STEP 2

Reprogram

These T cells are sent to a laboratory and modified to add special receptors called chimeric antigen receptors (CARs). This change gives your T cells a new "sensor" that’s designed to recognize unique proteins found on the surface of your B cells.

STEP 3

Infusion

The modified T cells are then infused back into your bloodstream to seek out and destroy B cells.
